Programs We Offer
PRESCHOOL 3-5 years
In community preschools we have a unique opportunity to work closely with families and children to create programs of learning which are derived from children’s interests, culture, strengths and existing knowledge.
At Alstonville Community Preschool we acknowledge that families are a child’s first and most influential teachers and therefore value the input of families in the educational program and prefer to work together with families to provide the best early childhood environment and learning for their child.
GUMNUTS NATURE LEARNERS
A large part of this program is discovery, critical thinking and planning involving research and project work, incorporating literacy, numeracy and many other key learning concepts. This program is best suited to children in their year before school.
There is a strong focus on sustainability and the environment, using natural materials as learning resources throughout the program and the Bundjalung Cultural Calendar as a guide for teaching and learning throughout the year.
Children will be supported to:
- develop an active appreciation of nature, nature play and care for Country,
- acknowledging the interdependence between people, land, plants and animals
- build social skills through collaborative learning
- development of critical thinking skills
- Nurture their creativity with natural materials for learning, arts, crafts and weaving
- work together to learn about sustainability and the environment, building knowledge of native plants/weeds, wildlife, regeneration and biodiversity
- Develop their physical skills, both fine and gross motor.
- Manage risk in play for themselves, through adventurous play opportunities.
PLAYGROUP
Our weekly Playgroup, run by two of our preschool educators, offers a wonderful play and learning opportunity for 2-3 yr olds and a valuable pathway to preschool.
Children and their families enjoy time in the preschool environment, developing social connections, and understanding more about child development and local support networks for children.
